Places to stay in Paauilo
Tranquil, private, setting amid stately Ohia trees with partial ocean views. The custom studio is 500sf with a limited height loft and large gorgeous bathroom and deck. Off grid with installed hi speed WiFi & cell booster.
The Studio is newly remodeled with a handsome central Ohia post and Silver Oak trim throughout. All the trim wood came from the property. The main sleeping space is a 10' X 10' loft space with sloping limited height ceiling. Downstair we have two couches, one opens into a comfortable queen size bed as need. There is a spacious, custom tiled bathroom and a covered deck to enjoy a sunny breakfast outdoors with views of the pasture, Ohia trees and the distant ocean. For entertainment we have a medium size TV and a good supply of DVD's. The sound system is bluetooth accessible for a wireless connection to the music on your phone, lap top or pad. A cell phone booster in the Studio allows connection to the outside world, as needed.
As quoted from the recently published: "My Year in A Yurt: It was this studio we stayed in. We absolutely loved the place, the lush grass-coverd rolling hills, the stately Ohia trees dotting the land, the ocean in the distance. It was so peaceful, so quiet, so healing." Yes, you are far from the urban madding crowd in a peaceful, quiet and rural location. We are surrounded by green; green grass, green trees, and green plants everywhere with wild turkeys and the occasional wild pig running madly across the pasture. Nights are clear and stars are blinding. Rain is possible but more likely are 15 knot trade winds which keep the air clear and fresh at a cool 1800' elevation. Our place is an ideal location from which to explore all parts of the Big Island. However, it is a minimum 20 minute drive to the nearest town of any size, (Honokaa town) and 45 minutes to the best gold coast white sand beaches.
  • Super peaceful spot, excellent for a retreat away from the hubbub. Plan on reading, watching movies, and sleeping well.

  • Everything for a really impressive epxerience in the nature. The house is so nice and very well equiped. Totally modern furniture and appliances make the stay very pleasant. Baki is a very nice host and you won‘t miss anything.

  • Baki & Bailey's place is remote, well equipped, & absolutely peaceful. Stars at night through the window over the bed. Breakfast each morning with smoothies we made in the provided individual Ninja blender (Baki also provided us Gluten Free Bread since my boyfriend has Celiac's ❤️). BBQ at night using the BBQ on the deck. We also loved using the provided snorkeling gear. WiFi is on & off (it is switched back on without any trouble) but honestly if you're hooked on WiFi you're not getting the point. Book this place.

  • What a great getaway. Highly recommended! Cozy bed, a full functional kitchen, and a thoughtful host. A wonderful visit to this side of the island. We hope to return.

  • The moment you turn up the road to Baki's cottage you enter a magical forest. Two miles up the road and you are in heaven! Clean, comfortable, and cozy, with everything you need to make coffee and meals (including yummy items left by Baki!). The setting is peaceful and the night sky is gorgeous. Beach chairs, towels, snorkeling gear, and a cooler are all on hand should you need them for a day at a glorious nearby beach. Baki met us during check-in and she was warm, hospitable, and very easy to communicate with. Highly recommended!

Fully furnished with Cal King bed. Attached private Ohana on the lush hamakua coast of the big island. Located in Pa’auhau “the land of sunshine” on the southern end of Honokaa. Please note My husband builds furniture out of the garage and there is potential for noise between the hours of 9-5 on some days.
The Ohana is fully furnished. 1 California king size bed, desk with chair, and breakfast table with 2 chairs, dresser, night stand , T.V with Netflix/Hulu /Amazon Firestick capability. House is only 3 years old so space is nice and clean.
Close to beautiful Waipio Valley. Kalopa Park with hiking trails within 10 min.
  • Nice place. Interaction with host was minimal, but always friendly.

    Nathan2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • The accommodation conforms to the description. It is well equipped for a stay of a week or more. We had a pleasant night.

    Bene2020-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • The private studio was perfect for two people exploring Honokaa and the Big Island. It is located 10-15mins by car from Waipio Valley Trail; also recommend the Honokaa Farmers Market on the way to the Trail! The studio is located in a cute neighbourhood; be prepared to hear chickens and nature at night— although a box fan was provided if needed. The bathroom and kitchen were well-stocked with all basic amenities. Bridget and Billy were available if any needs arose, and they provided snorkel gear and beach chairs/ towels if needed. We did not use the television, but there was one! Overall, it was a great place to stay on the Big Island! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!

  • They had a really nice set up at this place! We were only there for a night but it had everything you’d need to use it as a base camp for a longer stay. It was also just a nice room and everything was clean.

    Andrew2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • Space is the lower part of split level home. Host met us and made sure we were settled. Has all you might need for a few days stay. Especially appreciated the fan and the tea, coffee, dressings, etc. nice to have beach stuff provided as well.

    Liz2020-02-07T00:00:00Z
  • It was great staying at Bridget's bnb, quiet, comfy bed, nice big beautiful shower, refrigerator and toaster oven a plus! It was especially nice chatting with Bridget about local places to explore! She was a great host! 😊❤️

Nestle into your lounger as you escape into an Aloha state of mind, to lush pastures of grassy morning dew, billowing playfully as the trade winds blow out to the deep blue horizon of the Pacific. It is here you will find where you always belonged.
Aloha and welcome to our home! We hope that you find our spacious attached studio to be so much more than pictures will ever show. It is furnished and laid out to take every advantage of the beautiful landscape surrounding our home. There are several seating arrangements including a plush lounger, perfect to read a book or even to prop up an easel and to paint the morning sun rise over the canopy of trees in the horizon. We hope that you don't spend all of your day plopped in the grand queen-sized bed that stares off into the horizon; a morning jog along the nearby cane fields towards the fields of eucalyptus trees is just the perk you need to breathe in the sweet country air. Our kitchenette is well equipped with all the local spices you may need to prepare your treasured local produce found at nearby open markets to a homely meal. A flatscreen TV with local cable channels and a stereo system provide a base for your entertainment needs, as well as a few board games, DVDs and books within our large walk-in closet. Our home rests against the beautiful Hamakua countryside which is flush with a combination of rainforest and pasture land, nearby Akaka Falls and Waipio Valley, and diversified agricultural land. Being in the rainforest and countryside, it is not uncommon to hear roosters in the morning, coqui frogs chirping, cows mooing from a distance, the croak of native geckos blessing our home and keeping the critter count low. I do have a few outdoor cats, that mainly keep to themselves. The Kamehameha Highway (HWY 19) is adjacent to our home, earplugs and sleeping masks are provided to minimize road disturbance and provide extra comfort and rest. Road noise may be prominent in the morning but quickly subsides mid-morning.
Our home is located in the once bustling plantation town of Pa'auilo, about 40 minutes north of Hilo, 10 minutes from Honoka'a, 25 minutes south of Waimea, 30 minutes from Waipio Valley, 40 minutes from Waiakoloa and over an hour away from Kona. It is one of many villages along the Hamakua coast line. Where sugar cane was once harvested and plentiful, diversified agriculture and eucalyptus fields remain. Hamakua reaps the benefits of high rainfall providing for the lush landscape but remarkably has the most temperate climate of any region on the Big Island. Due to its rich volcanic soil, the Big Island produces some of the highest quality agriculture in the state. Coffee, macadamia nuts, and papaya are just a handful of its world reknowned crops. The Hamakua region itself is home to numerous waterfalls and specialty produce farms like mushrooms and vanilla. Waimea and its rolling hills houses the largest privately owned ranch in the country Parker Ranch; with access to a collection of locally sourced products it's easy to see that the Big Island has a rich tradition of farm to table dining culture.
  • Nice stay. Everything was clean. The ocean view is wonderful. A little bit noisy due to the close proximity of the main road. Good situation, it’s central between Hilo, the Mauna Kea and the valleys.

    Sophie2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • Very nice place up to date. Spacious and warm with great hosts! I highly recommend !

    Helene2020-02-16T00:00:00Z

  • Josenia's place was probably the best spot for our last nights in Hawaii! Proper guidance, got our privacy and longly sought quietness, Josenia receiving us late and still being super available! We had everything we needed! :)

    Meryll2020-01-27T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed our stay. The room was very clean and private with its own entry. The bed is heavenly...and definitely the best among our various stays on the island. The nightly chirping from frogs was a delightful new experience.

    Mike2020-01-20T00:00:00Z
  • Jo was the sweetest host ever! She brought me breakfast and coffee every morning, and made sure to make me feel at home. I highly recommend staying here! Great location and super clean room/private bathroom.

    Juny2020-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing place! Spacious cozy studio with aloha spirit. Well equipped, clean, it’s been absolutely great! Noise of the road didn’t bother me at all, the road isn’t very busy. Jo is an amazing host, spoiled me with coffee and oranges / avocado from the yard. Communication and checkin was easy. I’ll miss her hospitality, the place and the lovely cats! One of the best Airbnb’s I stayed so far. I’d love to come back!

  • Varya's house is amazing! We appreciated all the wonderful amenities, some of our family members forgot the essentials like shampoo and soap, but once they realized they were supplied at the house they felt comforted. The space was perfect for our family of 9! Amazing yard for the kids to play. Kitchen is well stocked. There is also a plethora of food and spices left from past guests. Washer was well utilized by the whole family. Beautiful views and privacy. The kids enjoyed morning visits from the "neighborhood" horse! ( From the other side of the fence, of course) Felt more at home than just being at someone's place. Would strongly reccomend.

  • Great place loved everything about it will come back again 👌

    Gilda2019-10-21T00:00:00Z
  • I went with 4 families (2 adults and 2 children). It was a very spacious house + garden, and the children were able to spend time comfortably. The house was clean and everything needed to live. When I opened the balcony window in the morning, I could see the sunrise and the sea. I want to stay again! Thank you very much! !

    Yoshiko2019-10-10T00:00:00Z
  • The house is beautiful and completely private. The property even has fruit trees! We picked and ate starfruit, avocados and bananas. We even picked coffee "berries", YouTubed how to prep and roast the beans, ground them up and drank the freshest coffee ever! There is no a/c, but it was so peaceful at night to sleep to the frogs chirping in the distance. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!

    Joella2019-10-02T00:00:00Z
  • We just returned back home from a week long stay at Varya's place. The house is really beautiful and had so much more than we expected! It is really spectacular with a great view of the ocean! We arrived in Hilo very late on a Saturday so we stayed in a hotel in Hilo that first night and headed to the house the following day. That was definitely a good move since the house is 45 minutes from Hilo and nestled down a small street. Finding it at night would have been very difficult. The house has everything our family of 8 needed; plenty of rooms and sleeping space, three bathrooms, a laundry room and a great kitchen which we utilized A LOT! The kitchen has plenty of pots and pans for cooking and even some basic things, like spices, and a few food items, surly, left by other guests, but still great to have. We forgot syrup for French toast and there was some in the pantry! Varya was really great to work with, she responded quickly to questions, and make me feel like I was an old friend staying at her place! If we are ever on the Big Island again, we are definitely staying at Varya's! The only downside of Varya's place is that you might hear the neighbors. On the day we arrived, the children next door rode their loud motor bikes up and down the street for several hours. The rest of the week was very quiet though. The house is in a great location, but far from grocery stores. Make sure you get groceries at the Safeway in Hilo and your pharmacy needs at the Long's pharmacy in Hilo. There is no trash service in this area so be prepared to take your trash to one of the nearby solid waste stations. This is just a normal part of living in this area so we didn't mind it a bit. Do get the days and hours of operation from Varya so you can go to the correct one! Get ready to enjoy the sweet sounds of Coqui frogs and refreshing island breezes at Varya's place!

    Teresita2019-08-16T00:00:00Z
  • Love the sunrises, the birds and nature (Kalopa Park for example) nearby. Lovely bed rooms and very productive kitchen as well.

    Hans2019-07-18T00:00:00Z
  • We all had a great time. Was not expecting such a nice big house. A little far from the main areas for our personal preference but definitely still easy to get around. Check in and check out was really easy. Unfortunately not the season for fruit when we went :( we would definitely return.

  • The house is in a great location, close to beautiful waterfall hikes to the North or South! The house was very generously stocked with bathroom and kitchen supplies, and definitely had everything we needed to cook all of our meals. There’s a beautiful papaya grove in the backyard, and a safe, homie feel.

  • Fantastic location if you want to be away from the hustle and bustle. Clear evening provided unbelievable view of stars. Host is knowledgeable and provided a tour of his farm with all kinds of editable plants. We enjoyed our time there.

  • What a wonderful and unique stay! T and his wife are so kind and welcoming. We chose to stay here because we were interested in seeing what a converted shipping container home would look like. T gave us a tour around the property and let us pick his brain about his home. So interesting! Everything was sparking clean and the bed was super comfortable. The locals are also welcoming and super nice-- this is a must stay on the big island!!

  • Great place where you can experience the island life outside the resorts. The location is a farm on the side of a mountain. Owners are raising sustainable heirloom and exotic fruits and veggies. Will give you a tour and samples of what is in season. Enjoy being lulled to sleep at night by the frogs, wild turkeys and ducks. Stars fill the sky and it is peaceful. Thoughtful touches abound, place is spotless, kitchen is well stocked with condiments and and owners are very friendly and helpful. Communicated with us and were ready to help in any way. Fantastic experience!

    Jim2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • Mr T is one of the most friendly, resourceful, and welcoming hosts we've ever encountered, and he was quick to solve issues as they arose. The place is a cozy container attached to the host's house. It's close to the road but it's a dead end so there's almost no traffic, though you may hear a truck in the distance now and then. The elevation is 2000 ft, so the winter it can get cold at night (~50F / 10C); if you see this coming, be sure to ask Mr T for an electric heater. The tap water is sometimes not great but Mr T has a good solution for that too. The garden is beautiful, with every tropical fruit you can think of growing somewhere, and he greets you with a selection of whatever's in season. Be sure to ask for his tour of the admirable sustainable agriculture project he has going here. Much recommended!

At Mana Loli our mission is connection, exploration and manifestation. Our aim with our guests is to provide an experience of life on the beautiful Big Island. One where you may connect with "aloha aina" (love of the land), explore your creative power and reflect on what you want to manifest for yourself.
Mana Loli is a quiet sanctuary tucked up on the slopes of Mauna Kea. It is a space where you can play and learn on the land, cook, relax around the fireplace, star gaze and use nature for inward reflection. We have many animals which roam freely through our space: four cats (Aina, Wai, Pele and Makani), a rooster (Joe) and many birds (Cardinals and Kalij pheasant). You may also be able to sight our neighbors donkeys, or wild pigs during your stay. We also have fruiting tropical trees, a varieties of flowers, and native flora.
We are in a center location to explore the North side of the island. It is a 20 minute drive to classy town of Waimea, a 15 minute drive to the quaint town of Honoka'a, and a 25 minute drive to the historically wondrous Waipio Valley.
  • This place is a fantastic sanctuary. The property is lush with plants/wildlife and is extremely relaxing. The facilities are very clean and anything you could hope for was provided. Highly recommend.

  • A great hideaway in the north. Just a few minutes away from Honokaa and a perfect stay after a long hike at Waipio Valley. The house itself has a great japanese touch, a fully equipped kitchen, huge garden and a fantastic host. Had a cosy evening at the fire with other guests - totally enjoyed it.

The only draw back are that Hawaii homes the walls do not have insulation because it doesn't get that cold and the walls are thin and you can hear a little through them like hotels. However you are getting a one of kind house for half the price you will pay for a hotel and you get to experience a custom built zen house. Please be mindful of the quite hrs from 9pm-9am to ensure a great stay for every guest. Even though the main house is divided into two private rentals, if you wanted to rent the whole house we can open it up and also ofter the other 2 bedroom retreat next door for special events. We have our property manager on property in a separate house across the courtyard incase you need any assistance.
Is a quiet safe neighborhood, there's coffee farms, vanilla farms just walking distance. Great walks just go left when you leave the driveway on Kahana drive!

Welcome to our new home in beautiful Ahualoa! We live on a very quiet, one lane country road, 10 minutes above historic Honoka'a town. We are a family of 4 and we have 3 friendly dogs. You will be staying in our detached guest house which has a queen bed, a full bathroom and a kitchenette. We are on 5.5 acres with cows and chickens. There is a beautiful view of Mauna Kea and a lot of hiking and exploring do right from the house.
The 400sf detached guest house has convenient parking and is completely private. We are in a remote location which only has satellite internet service, so streaming TV and movies is not always possible, but our connection will allow for checking email and other basic online activities. Cell service may also be spotty here. The kitchenette is equipped with basic dishes, a toaster oven, microwave, coffee maker (and coffee grinder), and a small refrigerator.
Ahualoa is a very quiet area with beautiful country roads. There are farms everywhere and some forest areas to be explored. Nearby Honoka'a town is one of the last plantation towns in Hawaii and there are lots of shops and restaurants, all located along the picturesque main street. Just a few miles from Honoka'a town is Waipio Valley, where you can find a beautiful black sand beach, waterfalls and wild horses.
  • If you are looking for a peaceful getaway, look no further. Staying at Matt & Krista's little cottage was a delightful experience filled with Aloha. If you are interested in getting away from the swarm of tourists, from the cookie cutter resort type experience, this is the place for you. Nestled at the top of a windy road up from the quaint little town of Honoka'a, this place is a perfect getaway for a couple (and children if you are willing to share space - which we did with our 1 year old). Clean, simple and lovely decoration and equipped with just what you need. The kitchenette has a full fridge, microwave, coffee maker and toaster oven and we easily made meals every morning and night. But most importantly, the warmth and kindness of Matt & Krista were the highlight of our stay. With their 2 wonderful children and 3 loving dogs, we felt right at home, cared for and like old friends. I highly recommend this place! Mahalo to Matt, Krista and the family.

  • Matt and Krista, we loved staying at your place! It was very clean and had great amenities. The views of the stars at night was spectacular as well as the view the next morning of Mauna Lau. Krista was so warm, friendly and helpful. She suggested where we should go back into town and eat. We met Matt the morning after our stay. He is a very kind and warm man. We lived talking to him about him beautiful architectural designs including our accommodations and their home. You will not be disappointed by the A plus accommodations but mostly by the warmth and kindness and genuineness of this family! Mahalo!

The guest house will be accented by local fruit, flowers, fresh local chocolate, locally produced soap, and possible other bounty from the land upon arrival. WiFi is working, but it is very slow compared to mainland internet speeds! Some cellphones, including Verizon, get decent service here. Note: A very friendly cat also makes her home here.
Large balcony and fresh trade wind air. Peaceful view of the ocean looking North. Kitchen with mini fridge/freezer. No oven. Tile bathroom/shower with Stained glass. There is a new, full-size bed (i know, the other description says: 'Queen') in the main indoor living space, extra linens are stored in drawers underneath the bed. There is a twin bed in the loft. Local coffee, tea, and chocolate tea are provided as well as local sugar or honey. A very friendly Cat named Fairy.
We visit Laupahoehoe Point regularly, our nearest easy ocean access. For hiking, Forest, and native forest Kalopa park is straight up the mountain. Hilo is a 50 minute drive from here, end it will take you about that long to get to the nearest white sandy beaches.
  • The stay at K farm was very very peaceful. We truly enjoyed the deck every morning especially with miss fairy cat. The location was perfect for my husband and I as this was a perfect place as far as location to stay while we explored the big island and as well as close to Waipi’o valley where we got married. We left a few things in the cottage for the next person to enjoy that we thought others could use as well. And we loved miss fairy so much so as the hostess with the mostest we left some cat treats for her to enjoy and even started a hashtag on Instagram for her so we can keep updated on how her sweetness is doing #fairythecottagecat Thank you Joshua for the hospitality we truly love staying in your home away from home

    Jazmyn2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • A very pleasant stay in a cute little guest house. The location was perfect for exploring Waipio valley and just close enough to chase the sun over to the west side in the evenings. We adored having Fairy the cat around. She was super sweet! We also enjoyed having our morning coffee out on the large porch overlooking the ocean. Another perk was the gorgeous shower! We ended up hanging our lighter beach towels over a few of the windows without curtains, but overall a non-issue for us. We had complete privacy during our 2 night stay.

    Jennifer2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • Joshua has created a very lovely and unique space that was just perfect for me. I stayed a week and would have been happy to stay longer. I had a hard time leaving Fairy the cat - who welcomed me from the get go and we were instant best friends. I loved the privacy, views, peace and the natural light plus the well-designed simplicity of the space. The large covered deck is truly amazing - you can sit outside whatever the weather. The bathroom and kitchen are both delightful. The bed is very comfortable. Joshua is on hand if needed, very helpful with arrival but totally respects your privacy - a perfect host. On the lovely wood kitchen bar you will find fruit and home made chocolate to begin your stay. The grocery store in Honokaa is five minutes away plus a couple of restaurants (But I mostly cooked at home) and Waimea is 20 or so mins and offers many restaurant options and a world class theatre - Kahilu. A 15 minute drive in the other direction is the friendly and fun Papa'aloa Country store for affordable deli, restaurant and live music most nights. Kalopa State park is a couple of minutes up the road from the house and provides wonderful native trails and picnic areas. This is a great base to explore from or a wonderful retreat to slow things down. Or both! I very much hope to return.

    Maddy2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • Convenient place off the grid to stay as a base for exploring Waipio and Waimea! Great value for the price! Friendly cat that wants to be inside with you! Cozy place! Bring your own shower supplies.

    Sarah2020-02-14T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great stay on the farm. It was a great location to explore Hilo and Volcano but still be within an hour from the Kona airport for our early morning flight home. We also enjoyed Flumin' Kohala tour, Hawaiian Vanilla Farm tour, Akaka Falls, Rainbow Falls, Onekahakaha Beach, and Waipi'o Lookout. We encountered lots of rain and wind but the little cabin held up great and Joshua brought us extra blankets. The cat, Fairy, loved to snuggle and didn't shed much so she was nice to have around even though I am not much of a "cat person". Don't be afraid to drive on the grass to get to the parking pad once you enter the "A" gate. We enjoyed trying new fruits (starfruit and some seriously tangy tangerines) and the homemade dark chocolates from the farm. The views are beautiful especially when we were treated to a double rainbow. The double bed downstairs is comfortable, upstairs was a very basic twin mattress so we bought and left a foam mattress pad from walmart. The place is a perfect stay for 2 people. The kitchen is adequate but no microwave and don't plan on leftover ice cream staying frozen in the small fridge/freezer combo. Overall a great stay and fantastic value, will stay again next time we come.

    Melissa2020-02-12T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely space with an excellent view of the water and an unnecessarily amazing bathroom! The road is slightly rough, so low-slung modern cars take a bit of concentration.

    Daniel2020-02-07T00:00:00Z
  • Josh’s place is beautifully set facing the ocean on a working farm. I brought my older parents here in hopes for a peaceful getaway and farm-like experience but still with modern amenities and Josh’s place totally fulfilled that! It’s clean, well built, appliances are all working and in great shape, the shower has a beautiful stained glass touch to it, and the bed is really comfortable and the stars come out to play at night. There is an adorable and snuggly Siamese cat named Fairy that hangs out at the house and by the end of our trip she was lying in our suitcase. I wanted to take her home! She was a great house guest. Thank you Josh for an awesome stay. We’ll definitely be back!

    Elisabeth2020-02-05T00:00:00Z
  • This is a spacious cottage with an ocean view in the background and incredible views of the night sky. It is well appointed considering it's a cottage (it even has WiFi). It is close to a small historic town with a few good food options. It is very close to waipo valley and not too far from the famous coastline on the northwest part of the island. Our only regret is we didn't stay longer. The best part is it comes with a roommate, a cat named fairy. She is incredibly sweet and will hang out with you the whole time you are there. We would stay here again in a heartbeat.

A "tiny house" experience Big Island style. An authentic Hawaii country experience with two futons (main floor and in loft). Plenty seasonal fruit:oranges, tangerines, bananas, papayas. Large lanai overlooking the gulch, inside coffee maker, cooler, and a cozy space for being "unplugged" (no TV, internet). Access to fridge. Outdoor sink and hot shower, new outhouse. Constructed primarily of recycled and repurposed materials, in the spirit of sustainability cherished by our island.
We'd love to welcome you with aloha and can provide additional input and guidance if you desire: make your own dehydrated bananas or fruits, help weed the pineapples, pick fruit, learn how and make your own kombucha. Of course, ideas for hikes, shopping, restaurants, and waterfalls/events are also provided upon request.
Only four houses on my road-----this is pure country, but only 45 minutes from great beaches and most activities.
  • Loved it! We stayed here our last night on island before going back to Oahu and it was so nice 😊 If you are an anti-nature person then this might not be the best place for you because it’s a bit open to the outdoors with the screen door and outdoor shower (and a cute little gecko inside!) but if you love listening to the rain as you go to sleep and being gently woken to the sounds of birds and the like then you will love it! I thought of it a bit like “glamping” in a way

    Marissa2020-02-19T00:00:00Z
  • Carol’s place was one of the best place we stayed at on the island! It’s very private and cozy. It is very accessible test it feels remote! Everything we need is there! I only wish we had taken some chicken to cook on the bbq :-) Carol is very nice and made us feel very welcomed! Perfect!

    Marc-André2019-08-31T00:00:00Z
  • This was a lovely stay in the forest! We met some geckos and had a great time drinking coffee on the porch and admiring the garden

    Christine2019-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • Carol’s place is a delight. We just needed a place to rest up between a couple of long days driving and hiking about. Perfectly sized for the three of us with lots of lovely touches. We were able to shelter from a storm and make some grilled cheese sandwiches and then watch a movie before bed. Whilst the storm (a huge one by Hawaii standards) meant it was a little tricky to sleep soundly, this is no reflection on the loveliness of the place. Note that there is no WiFi or cell service (network dependent) so just be sure you’ve done all your onward admin prior to arrival. It’s nice to switch off. The stars outside were incredible.

We live in a rain forest and occasionally will come across the mysterious pueo (owl), this peaceful place is called, Ka Hale Pueo (The House of the Owl). On a clear night you can light up the fire pit and stargaze! Inside you will find a cozy and modern country decor with most of the necessities you need. E komo mai! (Welcome!)
Ka Hale Pueo is located on a 5 acre estate with an entry gate. Your private one bedroom guest house has a private car port for your use. The cozy living room is equip with jealousies to keep your guest house cool throughout the day. It also has a room heater for those few chilly nights we have in Hawaii. Enjoy a bowl of popcorn while watching your favorite TV show or relax and unwind from your day. The spacious main bedroom comes with a comfortable queen-size bed. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need to prepare your favorite meals. The main house, where I am, is adjacent to your private guest house. We have enough space and distance between one other that grant you your own privacy, yet I am not too far should you need any assistance throughout your stay.
Ahualoa is mostly 5 acre farm lots with surrounding horses and animals. The historical town of Honoka'a is located only 10 minutes away. You will find restaurants, shopping, a grocery store, gas stations, a movie theatre and farmer's markets for your convenience.
  • Away from the hustle and bustle. A Very attentive host and always glad to help.

  • What a special place. What a wonderful hostess. A quiet retreat off the beaten path with some spectacular hiking nearby. Allison has thought of everything. The kitchen is the best equip I have experienced at a rental. She is also quick with thoughtful extras like blankets for a cold night, fresh fruit and eggs from the property. The amenities are just as advertised. The place is clean and spacious. The lanai is a lovely spot for breakfast, coffee, cocktails or yoga. The fire pit is perfect for enjoying the stars, a quiet moment or time with your companions. Allison, her family and this special find is filled with Aloha Spirit. I can’t recommend it enough.

    Stephanie2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • Allison’s place is tucked away in the forest, but surrounded by a large grassy expanse with a nice fire pit. It’s a beautiful setting! This is a cozy 1-bedroom home, with a large, covered lanai along one full side. There is covered parking attached to the home, so even on rainy days, you don’t get wet going from car to home. The home is well equipped and tastefully decorated. The full kitchen made fixing meals easy, and we appreciated the gas grill for grilling our fresh fish. Allison and Scott are friendly hosts who went the extra mile to welcome us and make us feel at home!

    Ramona2020-01-15T00:00:00Z
  • Allison was a beautiful host! I was knackered from my flight so it was lovely to walk into the little bungalow to see chocolate and popcorn! It was very much needed! There were so many cute touches to the place, and it was so well equipped including towels and even insect repellent! Thanks again Allison for everything! We really enjoyed our stay :)

    Jane2020-01-05T00:00:00Z
  • Allison's guest suite is truly a hidden gem in Honokaa. We booked her house to stay for 5 nights away from the New England cold, and the property was the coziest home-away-from-home we could ever hope for. Not only that, she kindly accommodated photographers and a makeup artist to show up early in the morning for our photography session, and for that we can confidently say we've never met an AirBnB host as great as Allison. The house is quietly secluded within tall Hawaiian woods, and during the nights we could stargaze outside without any city lights or disturbances. That being said, Waimea, a town with all the conveniences, is only a short drive away and provides all the culinary delights big island had to offer. Thanks to the great location the suite is situated at, we visited Kona, Hilo, Volcanoes National Park, Pololu Valley, Waipio Valley, and multiple beaches on the west end of the island without any difficulties. The suite itself easily fits a couple or a small family looking to spend some time relaxing at Hawaii. There is a full set of kitchen and bathroom amenities, and you'll love the interior style as well as the open space within the suite. Since we visited around Christmas, Allison had a Christmas tree as well as lights hung outside of the house! Last but not least, if you're an animal lover, you'd be delighted to know that the family has a few chickens and a dog who will occasionally pop by. They are the cutest animals to enliven your stay :) If you've read this far, book this place. Trust me, it will be better than you've ever imagined.

    Robert2019-12-24T00:00:00Z
  • We travel for months at a time and it is rare to find a place that feels as comfortable as 'home'. We were sorry to leave! Best equipped, best host, best stay yet!

    Jean2019-12-17T00:00:00Z
  • So much to be said for this magical place. It truly embodies the Aloha spirit. Ka Hale Pueo is well appointed and the grounds are phenomenal. It feels like a fairy tale. The home has everything you could possibly need. Allison is the most gracious host. She truly cares for her guests and it shows. I arrived to a warm welcome, fresh fruit, and a gift basket filled with some snacks. I felt like I was visiting family. The lanai was truly my favorite part. I couldn’t wait to have my morning coffee out there. I can’t wait to come back to make new memories!

Enjoy the cozy, off the grid, tiny house. Its a peaceful, relaxing retreat near Waipio Valley. You will wake up surrounded by trees/greenery in hamakua forest. Kick back and relax in our hammock chairs under one of our avocado trees. We are just a 5 minute drive from Honokaa town and 15 minute drive from Waipio Valley. Your room includes a Hawaiian style private outdoor shower and enclosed bathroom, plus a covered outdoor kitchen and dining area. perfect retreat for nature lovers.
Minutes from Waipio Valley, Spencer Beach, Hapuna Beach and Beach 69. Guests beginning their Hawaiian adventure say they really regret having to leave and wished they booked their whole trip with us. Guests ending their vacation regret not staying from the start, saying our place was by far the best thought out and executed Airbnb experience they had on the island. This is an ideal place for warm hearted and friendly adventurous people with the will to explore who enjoy nature and animals. Location location location, we are between Hilo and Kona so no need to relocate. Hilo and Kona are a beautiful short drive away with much to see on the way. This is a prime location for cycling enthusiasts. When you open the door to your room, you will see a field of green tea plants across the way at the tea farm. The off the grid room has solar powered lights and a couple usb charging ports for your mobile phones. Shower has running hot water. Experience our new model - waterless, dry flush toilet which does not use any harsh chemicals and has no odor. The Hawaiian style outdoor kitchen provides camping style cooking with a sink with cold running water, a gas BBQ, a large polar cooler. We also provide plates, cups, flatware, pots and pans and cooking utensils. We also have available beach towels, snorkel gear and Boogie boad.
We are located directly across the street from Mauna Kea Tea Farm. They do tours and tea tasting by appointment. So don't forget to schedule a tour before arriving. We are also located in an area with the best cycling on the island. Perfect location if you are a cyclist. As we are located in the hills above honokaa, a vehicle is a must. We are 5 min drive to Honokaa town and 20 min drive to Waimea. We are very centrally located half way between Kona and Hilo. We are only 40 min from Mauna Kea visitor center, a must see when visiting the Big Island. We have plenty of local recommendations to share with our guests. There are no street lights in the area, so it is very dark at night. It may be a challenge to find us at night for the first time.
  • This is our second stay at Bebos Basecamp and will be back again. Highlights include the most genuinely kind hosts, clean home, comfy bed, shower under the stars, fresh avocados, lemons, mandirns and oranges. They have the sweetest dogs you will ever meet. Bebo has lots of wonderful tips for traveling the area. An absolute wonder and joy we most definitely will return.

    Lyndze2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • Bebo and Karen are very welcoming, as are their 2 dogs. The place is really nice and very well equipped. We are calm ... everything is really great! We had a great time there.

    Virginie2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • If you book Bebo and Karen’s place be sure you book enough time to REALLY enjoy it. Our two nights were not enough. I could have spent an entire day lounging in the swings. We had a campfire and marveled at the stars. And do not underestimate how delightful it is to have a steaming hot shower under the stars. This place is so cozy and quiet. I loved the sounds of the forest and the beautiful surroundings. Bring a few extra layers as it’s cool in the evening (we were never cold in the cabin thanks to the cozy blankets!) and enjoy some time outside. There’s a lot more to Hawaii than the beaches and this is the perfect place to explore from.

  • What an incredible sweet spot. Easily worth double the price. I wanted to stay for a month!

    Karen2020-02-19T00:00:00Z
  • The property is very well located to explore a large radius of the beautiful island. For this reason and since it rained and stormed several times during our stay, we rarely used the inviting garden with the hammocks and the fireplace. The little house is very pretty and cozy. The toilet thought out and who doesn't dream of an outdoor shower? We can highly recommend the accommodation, especially if you like to be in the middle of nature! Thanks for the warm welcome. Roswitha & Manuel

    Roswi2020-02-11T00:00:00Z
  • Great hosts! Nice dogs. Shower is hot. Bed is comfy. Had a couple of issues with the toilet, but Bebo fixed it right away. Nice to star gaze beside the fire pit. Delicious avocados grow on their property. We didnt use the outdoor kitchen. Thanks!

    Joseph2020-02-06T00:00:00Z
  • We loved staying at Bebo's and Karen's place. Communication was easy, the place was orginal and they were both so welcoming while also leaving us our private space. They even let us take fruits from their trees on the property! We had a little issue with the dry bathroom but Bebo was very quick to come fix the issue and says shouldn't be a problem for future stays as it'll be improved! Plus: You get a shower with a view on the stars, chairs to stargaze and you even have a firepit and some wood to make a fire. They also gave us some good tips on where to visit. Definitely recommend staying there.

  • This space was really cute and clean! Right in the town of Honokaa, we were able to walk to restaurant and stores, and we loved how close it was to Waipio Valley!!

  • Nice place! We had a great stay! What a beautiful and clean place. Communication was quick and friendly!

  • We loved our stay here, it was cozy, safe & super easy to park & check in. Communication was great every step of the way. The town of Honokaa is just gorgeous! Thanks again.

  • Exactly as described. Super cute place.

  • A quiet and safe stay in Honokaa, right across from the police station and fire station as well. The entire town is in walking distance. There were many other visitors in the area at the time but not crowded. So many wonderful places to visit. The cottage was very roomy and clean. Fresh fruit trees right outside the door. My wife really enjoyed the neighbors cat. She looked forward to seeing her every morning. Weather was great, sunny and cool. We are looking forward to returning to Honokaa in the near future and staying in this cozy cottage. Great job Mai!

    Michael2020-01-28T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay here was such a treat. The small downtown is great for a stroll and quick bite in the morning before setting off to enjoy other parts of the big island. The space itself was so relaxing, very nice decorative touches. Highly recommend for anyone looking to stay a little off the beaten tourist path. If we're on big island again we will certainly be checking this rental first :)

    Drew2020-01-23T00:00:00Z
  • Very cool space right in town. Really liked the guesthouse setup. Very conveniently located. Excellent communication with host, particularly when we thought we left an iPad behind. Mar even asked the next guest if it was there and everyone communicated immediately to help us when we were a bit frantic. I would definitely stay there again.

Private Bedroom on the Main strip of Historic Honokaa town! Just 1 mins walk to town with shops & restaurants! 10 mins to Waipio Valley with black sand beaches & Waterfalls, the 2nd most visited spot on island! This 3 bedroom Hawaiian Style Plantation house is newly renovated. There's a historic koi pond in the courtyard and outside hallway that leads to 2 shared bathrooms & Full Kitchen! Free wifi and smart TV! We are north central so it's great for going either side to Hilo or Kona & Waipio!
We are north so we do not get any VOG and is safe from the volcanic activity. We have many people evacuating to this area it has the best air quality all year round. The Volcano room is our smallest room and cheapest, what's nice is it has windows all around, it's good if you wanted to save money. I recommend this room is best for one person as it's the smallest room in my complex. For only $5 more you can get a bigger room for two. But some guest want to save money so they don't mind but I wanted you to know there's other rooms that are larger. This is the only room without a ceiling fan, however we have a portable small fan, depends when you stay if it's during the winter months you won't need a fan cause it's pretty cool at night. If you want bigger space the Master bedroom is large or Hamakua room is med size for just $5 more our Mauna Kea room has it's own entrance and Waipio Studio is largest with it's own kitchenette. We have had many guests stay in this room and didn't mind because they are out most of the day and would prefer to save the money.
It's in the Historic town of Honokaa, you get to enjoy walking to town, to farmers markets, shops, restaurants, historic theatre for only $6, free public pools, skate park, libary next door. My Shave ice and boba tea shop in front!
  • You are centrally located in downtown Honokaa, right across from shops, restaurants, and the Hamakua Police Station. It is very safe. The beds, sheets, pillows, and towels are all first rate. It is very clean. There is a nice koi pond and a sleepy house cat. The owner Mai, her sister Mar, and Uncle Jimmy are all very helpful. Mai has several housing options here. Small room with one bed; larger room with two beds; large studio with kitchenette and frig; larger unit set apart from the others with its own private bath and kitchenette; etc. The private unit is truly beautiful, but it is more expensive than the other rooms. Most rooms share a couple of clean bathrooms and have their own showers. Mai's team does a great job keeping the place clean and bug free. It is less expensive here than many places on the Kona side. Honokaa, the Hamakua Coast, and Waipio Valley are all beautiful. You are 20 minutes from Waimea, and an hour or so from Kona and Hilo. I look forward to a return visit.

    Derek2020-01-07T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent value, right off the main strip of town. Very clean! We used Mai's place as a launching pad for visits to both Waipio Valley and Pololu Valley hikes. Uncle Jimmy was a great point-person for questions and so kind. The lanai is pretty tight on space (as advertised), but there are plenty of common areas for lounging. Kitchen is stocked with plenty of pots/pans/cutlery, and some cooking essentials (salt/oil/etc). Note that there are only 2 shared bathrooms for several rooms, so when it's a full house, there can be a fair wait time for the bathroom...reminiscent of college dorm days :P Would recommend!

    Ulrich2019-12-19T00:00:00Z
  • Mai’s is a sweet place. It’s right in town and close to everything. The room and shared spaces were clean and cozy. Highlights were listening to the coquis at night and fresh orange juice in the morning.

    Meta2019-12-03T00:00:00Z
  • Nice old and clean house with little garden, where you can look to the stars. The volcano room was -liked described- little, but cosy and with oceanview. Honokaa ist a little lively „westerntown“. We would come again.

    Andrea2019-11-16T00:00:00Z
  • We were really well settled in this accommodation. It was really very clean and comfortable. On top of that, Mai sent us lots of useful information about the neighborhood and the activities to do :)

  • Incredible property in an amazing location. Off the beaten track and the only noise you hear is waves crashing. I loved having all the lights out and stand at the floor to ceiling windows admiring the impressive amount of stars. Communication with the hosts was fantastic and there were some great local tips.

The view and sound of the ocean made it feel like a dream. The service they provided was fantastic as well. I will definitely be back here and fully recomend this place to anyone whos interested.

    Shane2018-12-01T00:00:00Z
  • I loved this house. It was unbelievable. Both my mother and I got sick when we were staying here and we both agreed it was an excellent place to have a cold because you could just sit inside all day, looking at the amazing view, and it felt like you were accomplishing something. I do wish it was owned by an individual versus a company as communication with individuals is always easier. For instance they requested a bit more money from us due to a Hawaii tax change which Airbnb said we did not have to pay. The fellow who checked us in was wonderfully nice and we had no problems with checkin. Also two side notes- the pool is not heated and there are quite a bit of stairs. The views are unbelievable and I 100% recommend booking this place for the stunning views alone!! It was also very clean.

  • This place is perfect for a couple. It's a romantic getaway. There is a ton of sunlight and you feel like you're in the middle of the forest. If lots of crickets and other insect noises bother you, then this may not be ideal. The town of honokaa was a great little town with a couple nice food options and shopping options. I would highly recommend this place to anyone trying to stay in this section of the island.

Located on the tropical Hamakua Coast in the historic town of Honokaa, this home has 2 decks with beautiful ocean view, beside a tropical gulch. It sleeps 6 with a Calif King Tempurpedic bed, a queen sofa sleeper & twin bamboo daybeds. The bamboo daybeds are good for children & short/average people. “Luana Ola” in Hawai’ian means “To be at leisure, enjoying pleasant surroundings and good health”. Luana Ola VillaLuxury Home & Cottages are located on the tropical Hamakua Coast, near Waipio Valley on the Big Island of Hawaii. Imagine watching from your own private lanai (deck) a panoramic, unobstructed view of the ocean, embraced between a Terra Verdeʹ of Hawaii and a never boring, brilliant Big Sky. The ocean reflects the sky that is often shaped by the ocean. The showers are mostly gentle, warm and do not wear out their welcome. And when the trade winds bring a heavy rain, they reward you with a white water river running through the gulch guarding you on the left. The sound of thundering white waters passing you as you eat dinner, read, or lay in bed will make you wish for another strong storm to come by. The sky oscillates between azure colors the Mediterranean cannot have, the grey of passing clouds, and on a clear night you can be tempted to pretend you are grabbing a sparkling jewel from a pitch black heaven. Spend the whole day simply relaxing or visit nearby Waipio Valley, the Big Island’s Grand Canyon with an ocean starting at a black sand beach, or drive 25 minutes to the Akaka Falls, among the tallest cascading falls in North America. Hilo, the Capital, is 45 minutes south of us. Kona is 50 minutes away. Hapuna Beach, voted the best beach in the State of Hawai’i and one of the top 10 beaches in the U.S., is 40 minutes from us. The active part of the Mauna Loa Volcano (the red eye) is 1.5 hours away. Our location is completely sheltered from the active vents on the Island by the massive 14,000 feet Mauna Kea Mountain. The house it self is 3 stories high with the garage on the ground level. The first floor is all open with the kitchen and dining room on one level and the living room and deck down 3 steps. There is also a 1/2 bath and a storage room. The upstairs has the spa bath, shower, etc., the bedroom, a sun room, deck, laundry area and closet. Plus a small office area with desk and printer/copier which you are welcome to use to print your boarding passes. Both toilets have a bidet attachment for better personal hygiene. There is not a lot of privacy between the bedroom area and the sun room. Anyone sleeping on the bamboo day beds must past the master bed to get to the bathroom. The Endless Wave pool is behind the house. It is solar heater and can be used with or without the wave function. Available for your use are beach towels, 2 boogie boards, snorkel gear, a cooler and a small Smokey Joe BBQ. Pack N Play & Umbroller available upon request. Quiet hours are from 9:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m., during which time the noise should not unreasonably disturb the neighbors. Sound that is audible beyond the property boundaries during non-quiet hours shall not be more excessive than would be otherwise associated with a residential area. Guest vehicles shall be parked in the designated onsite parking area. This rental shall not be used for commercial purposes.
The house is on a very quiet street in the historic Town of Honokaa. You can walk to a farmer's market on the corner, visit the many shops and restaurants, even see a movie in the Honokaa People's theater. They also have live performances. There is a library and a public pool.
  • Our stay at Patricia’s was eventful in the beginning. There was a mishap which was abrupt, but was followed up and taken care of in a considerate and respectful manner in the end which is definitely a 5 star way to treat your guests. We loved the home and the area. It is very clean too! The furniture is gorgeous, the bed is comfortable, and the views are amazing! Thank you!

    Eliza2020-02-28T00:00:00Z
  • We keep returning to Patricia’s home, because it is perfect for us. We sit on the balcony and look at the stars, and the ocean. It is so peaceful and calm. We love the frogs and the birds, and that it feels like a secluded location. Being there is truly a vacation from city life.

    Jessica2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful place, great view. We loved the frogs at night and the roosters in the morning. Closing the windows kept the noise way down so there was no problem sleeping. Mohamed and Patricia were very kind. They brought us fruit and had suggestions for where to go. They were very quick to help us reset the wireless router one morning when it locked up. We'd love to go back.

  • Small town homey feel with a few shops and restaurants within walking distance. Central location for nature excursions. Clean, comfortable, and stylish rooms.

    Robert2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • Very clean, with a comfy bed & cute garden surrounding the property. The historic building has a nice quaint and cozy feel to it. Good place to stay if you want to be walking distance to the conveniences of Honokaa town and close to Waimea by car. :)

    Ellison2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • Clean spot with the basics

    Stephen2020-01-31T00:00:00Z
  • Mai’s place is perfect for travelers. It is a convenient, well managed and easy to use home away from home. Honoka’a is a quaint and charming town with friendly, delightful people. There are plenty of beautiful attractions close by.

    Sharon2020-01-27T00:00:00Z
  • I just completed a three week stay in Mai's "Waipio Studio." It is a big space with its own sink and small frig. I love its spaciousness and queen-sized bed. The studio shares a wall with a restaurant that fronts the main road, so be ready for a mix of IZ and classic oldies at about 7am in morning as the restaurant crew begin their day. I met some great people while there: an organic hemp farming couple from Canada who were touring hemp operations on the island; a retired engineer (also from Canada) who biked daily one of the "world's ten best bicycling routes" right at Mai's doorstep; a social worker from the Captain Cook area of the island; and a few more. While I wouldn't mind having my own bathroom, the fact of the matter is that for 23.5 hours per day, I don't need it; and sharing a kitchen encourages people to interact more with their neighbors, which turns out is an excellent thing. People shared local bananas, fresh made pasta, and organic celery and tomatoes grown in Waimea, among other things. Plus, if you are on a budget, the $65-$100 per night that Mai charges saves you money compared to accommodations elsewhere on the island. This is an historic wooden building from the 1920s. It's not the steel and cement you will find on the Kona side. Waipio Valley and the Hamakua Coast are lush and unlike anything you will find in Kona. Mai's Vacation Rentals are worth a stay, and make the perfect starting point for an adventure on this more tropical side of the island.

    Derek2020-01-25T00:00:00Z
  • Mai’s place was perfect for us. Mar was very helpful when we had issues with our reservation ( we needed another room) and gave us options. Worked perfect for us. I lived and worked in Honokaa before and this is an authentic experience of the town. Location was perfect and my friends loved that they were able to walk to stores and little restaurants easily. Safe neighborhood, lovely weather. Thank you Mar and Mai for accomodating us!

    Alice2020-01-04T00:00:00Z
  • Overall a great value place to stay, we were able to cook multiple meals in the kitchen, the place was clean and it was as expected. Only drawback was that it’s right next to the fire/police station so it could be a bit noisy but since we were exhausted by the time we got back to sleep it didn’t really affect us. Definitely would recommend considering, especially if you’re on a budget.

  • The only reason I wouldn't want to rave about staying at the Monastery is because I want us to be able to keep it as our little Hawaii secret. Having travelled the Hilo side over the years I have always marveled at the Dojo and we've visited the oceans wrath being inflicted on Lapahoehoe point. When we found we could actually stay there we jumped at the chance and stayed the bulk of the week. Not only was Ron amazing kind and gentle about guiding us in, totally present for anything we needed yet invisible to us as a host ( a host that makes insane Gelato by the way ) but we found the place as much like home as we could have imagined. Built in 1899 and lovingly restored for the last 18 years 'board by board', it was perfectly appointed, warm, period, private, and just plain perfect. As we are working on our practice, the amazing bonus was the opportunity to use the temple / dojo upstairs for daily yoga and it couldn't have been more ideal. Quiet, private, with the sounds of wind through the jungle, ocean sound, birds and coqui we were transported and can't wait to come back. Please don't read this, please stay away, we dont want it to be booked next time we come (!) thanks Ron see you soon B&V

  • We loved staying here! The mid-century tropical vibe of the space was lovely, and Ron was very thoughtful and generous with all the delicious fruit growing on the property.

    Bonnie2020-02-13T00:00:00Z
  • We absolutely loved our stay. Ron and Luann (I hope I got the spelling right!) were excellent hosts who made us feel welcome and were lovely and informative to chat with. There was a gorgeous tropical bouquet waiting for us, which was so thoughtful. The outdoor cats also helped show us around. The space is stunning and full of history with lots of interesting art and books and personal touches. The temple space upstairs was so beautiful I almost cried. We were able to go up and meditate and stretch in the morning. The whole place is very airy and lush, and you can hear a chorus of frogs and see the stars at night. There is a huge cast iron tub that is wonderful to soak in and lots of great things to do nearby. It’s a five-minute walk from an oceanside park, which is spooky and neat to go to at night. It’s too rough for swimming, but it’s beautiful to watch and listen to the waves crash on the rocks. Watch out for night pigs! We encountered one while on foot, but it bolted as soon as it saw us (thankfully). You can definitely hear footfalls if someone is upstairs during the day, but we went out and it never bothered us. There are kitchen things for your use, which we took advantage of, but it’s easier to have salads or other uncomplicated dishes given the shared stove/oven situation and the fact that you’ll probably be too tired from sightseeing to cook a three-course meal anyway. This stay was the highlight of our trip, and I already want to return!

    Emily2019-04-10T00:00:00Z
  • Everything about our stay in the converted temple was absolutely delightful! Ron was a terrific host with great suggestions for local dining and activities, and the temple itself - an unbelievable gem in a fantastic, secluded paradise! We loved the claw foot tub, amazing views from the windows, and spacious bedrooms. A bit off the beaten path - just what we wanted and so worth the short drive from Hilo. We’ll be back!

    Joan2019-01-27T00:00:00Z
  • Really liked the location on the east/northeast part of the island. The restored aspect of the property gave a very neat historical outlook. Ron and Louanne are great hosts and respond quickly. Would definitely come back here.

    Steve2019-01-03T00:00:00Z
  • When we were driving down Laupahoehoe Point Road to the former Buddhist Temple, our jaws dropped when we saw the beautiful coastline. Ron really undersells this place-- and it is certainly not the Marriott-- but that is not what you are signing up for. If you want to stay in a historic home that was built in the 1800s that you can see depicted in historic photos pre-1940s tsunami, this is a great place to stay. When you go down to the beach park (which is just a short walk down from the home) you can read about the tragic tsunami and see photos of the once thriving town that no longer exists-- but Ron's home is still there! We stayed for 2 nights. One day we combined both a hike into Waipio Valley and a trip to Akaka Falls -- two different directions but workable to combine in a single day. Thanks to Ron and LouAnn for your hospitality and best wishes as you continue to maintain this lovely historic property!

  • Cute and unique home. A great way to experience the big island, take a step back, and enjoy some of the quieter pleasures of the island. Ron is an excellent gelatician, and keeps the home / temple in great condition. We enjoyed the open architecture, great garden views, and eclectic selection of books. Thanks for a great experience.

    Matthew2018-07-01T00:00:00Z
  • Looking for tranquility & history? Then book Ron's unique and charming home. Kind of a cool adventure for us driving there in a downpour too. Our daughter also enjoyed the special temple space. Ron and his caretaker were super responsive to our needs and requests. Mahalo.

Our house is in town, one block from the main street. A tropical gulch is on one side and a neighbor's house on the other side and the beautiful ocean view from the back yard. The Town of Honokaa has almost everything you might want. The Honokaa Peoples Theater beside showing movies has live music and cultural events.
  • We loved this house! It was a fantastic value and a great space for two couples to share. We were glad to have two full bathrooms (and note that one bedroom has a twin bed). We could easily walk to the shops and restaurants. I loved the ocean view from the back of the house.

This large beautiful single family home is just a 10 minute walk to Kalopa State Park, 10 minute drive to Honoka'a town, and 20 minutes to Waimea. The house is up in the mountain on one acre of land. Experience the beauty of the Hamakua Coast as this location is perfect for any adventure. Honokaa is a quiet town and situated between Hilo and Kona. If you are looking for serenity this is the one for you. If you want night life and busy action might want to keep looking.
Your private bedroom is on the opposite side of the house. On your side you have 1.5 bathrooms and a second bedroom with a full size futon. You also have private access to the lanai where you can enjoy your morning coffee or tea. My internet can be slow at times. Should be okay for basic emailing and social media but you may experience problems if you want to video chat or watch a movie on your own device.
I am about 1/2 mile from Kalopa State park and a 12 minute drive to Honokaa town. My home is for travelers who want to get away from the city and enjoy some peace and quiet.
  • We loved staying here! Tammie was so helpful. We loved eating out on the porch while eating our meals and seeing the ocean.

    Ashlee2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • Tammie's place was a very good choice for us. The view from the front porch is absolutely beautiful!! The bedroom was roomy, big screen TV. The house was very clean. Tammie has a very friendly little dog and cat. There are fresh fruit trees in the front yard and Tammie lets you pick the fruit. I can't say enough good things about the accommodations and the host.

    Sparky2020-01-18T00:00:00Z
  • We enjoyed our stay at Tammie's beautiful Honokaa home. Tammie is an amazing and understanding host! We had fresh fruit for breakfast from her yard nearly every morning and fell in love with the Honokaa area. It was the perfect place to wake up to every morning before our travels and the best place to return to at night after our many adventures.

  • This was my 2nd stay with Tammie, Louie and Leila, and it was great. Love the lanai, the views and the cooler temperature for sleeping. Perfect location for me as my parents live 15min away in Paauilo. So great to have coffee on the lanai each morning and be greeted by Louie each evening.

  • Quiet location at approx. 1000 m height, therefore cool at night - it just sleeps better. In 10 minutes in Honokaa, there is a supermarket and various restaurants. Or you drive 20 minutes to Waimea, there is a little more life. Mai always responded to our inquiries immediately and very helpfully, we felt very comfortable. The bed in the large bedroom is very comfortable, there is a lot of space in the house and in the three weeks we actually had everything we needed.

    Belinda2020-03-07T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed our stay here. The location worked out nicely for us to go to Hilo and Kona and we liked that it really felt like Big Island - country living. I would stay here again! :)

  • Mai's place is immersed in nature in an idyllic hinterland. The view of the forest from the bay window is superb. Peaceful place, only sounds I heard came from the couqi frogs. Their friendly sounds welcoming us from a day of sightseeing. As it was summer, I was expecting hot nights, but was pleasantly surprised how cool it was, which made for very comfortable nights. Host Mai was both friendly and helpful. Mai went out of her way to help us with our needs. Thank you Mai for sharing your lovely home.

  • This place is a real gem!! I stayed in the dormitory which is the nicest dorm I’ve ever stayed in. Everything was so nice and comfortable, the bed and the shower are a dream. The whole house has so many great details and charming touches, it’s a real idyllic place. Lindi welcomed me and showed me around, she’s just the sweetest and nicest girl. I was encouraged to use everything I see in the fridge, which was packed, so that was a really nice treat. The remaining guests, Lindi and I ended up all sitting by the fire, drank some wine and had amazing conversation. This place is exceptional and I would come and stay here anytime again! Thanks guys!

  • Galen’s house is in the perfect location to the sweet, historic town of Honokaa. As you turn off the highway, you look down at beautiful horses in the fields and the stunning Pacific Ocean ahead. As you arrive at this tropical paradise, you are welcomed by a wide lanai with comfy sofas and a swing to just sit and admire the ocean and the lovely plantings. Galen, was the perfect host. I learned so much about the area. The house was charming and spotless! Don’t pass up this lovely home and the town of Honokaa.

  • Galen's home is unique, stylish and warm, in a very nice calm place near Honokaa with the view on the Pacific Ocean (no access to the beach in the village ). We enjoyed 3 nights and felt welcome. We also received a lot of information about the area and places to visit. The room is not big, but very clean and also stylish, bed is comfortable, the bathroom is only for the guests. Galen is a well-versed and friendly host. Everything was perfect to us.

  • My best friend and I stayed with Galen for one night on a trip around Big Island, and we wished we could have stayed longer. Galen’s property is beautiful, and on a hot summer day the pool was a godsend. We didn’t feel much like going out once we arrived, so stayed in and enjoyed Galen’s incredible hospitality (it was my friend’s 30th birthday that day, and was definitely a party he will remember). I would highly recommend adding a stay with Galen to your itinerary if you’re looking at a trip to Big Island!

This rental shall not be used for commercial purposes Honokaa is a quaint town with a historic theater that not only shows movies but has live performances. It also serves great sandwiches, tea, coffee, etc. From the cottage you can walk to the farmers market on the corner and numerous shops and restaurants. There is a library and a public pool also. The people are wonderful, very friendly. If you don't have a car, for $2 you can take the bus to Kona or Hilo. Bicycle rentals are available in town and various tours can be arranged. Please don't feed the fish in the Koi pond. Coqui frogs do make noise at night.
Luana Ola is on a small dead end road, usually quiet but close to town. You can walk up to town but it is a little hilly.
  • I stayed in the Green Cottage for a week and it was a really pleasant, comfortable stay. I mostly had sunny weather but on the day it rained there was a delightful waterfall in the gulch outside the bedroom window! The cottage is well equipped and Patricia has thought of everything you could need and everything is in good working order. The laundry was a real bonus. I loved the location, in a quiet area but a short walk to town. The ambience, the views and the bird song make it a very relaxing place to slow down and chill. I hope to return.

  • An amazing spot for those who want to kick back and relax without the over-the-top tourist vibes. It's a perfect cottage, loved the screened-in porch to have tea in the mornings and cocktails in the evenings. It really felt like our own home during the stay, and had everything we needed. Perfect amount of space for two people, loved the local spots and fauna. We went to sleep with the sounds of the frogs and woke up with the sounds of the roosters, definitely recommend for anyone who's okay and used to countryside living. We had zero issues with any of the amenities, and it was a great area to stay in to visit both sides of the island at Kona and Hilo. Would definitely recommend getting a rental car, we thought we could do without but it really came in handy for all the day adventures. Wish I could go back to the sounds of to coqui frogs! If I find myself back on the big island , I will undoubtedly rent from Patricia again, no hesitation. Mahalo!

  • Great place to stay! Beautiful views from the deck. Loved the sounds of the island at night.

  • Very old time Hawaiian. Relaxing, quiet and comfortable. We had a hard time getting going in the morning with the relaxing view and coffee.

  • This is an amazing place to stay if it is your honeymoon, a couples getaway, or just a getaway for you on the countryside of the island! Very cute little ‘homey’ town walking distance from the cottage, where you can learn more history about the resilience of the land at their cultural center, good spots to eat for cheap, catch a movie or music performance and shops (if you’re a thrifter, Kona is THE SPOT! Everything is a $1!). Also have a drive in food place where the Malasadas are delicious! Be prepared to have an umbrella since it rains often on that side, and to drive an hour everywhere, but it’s such a breathtaking scenic adventure with no traffic. Also be prepared to have the frogs and birds chirping all night if you’re sensitive to sound (it was great for my partner and I since we’re both melodic people). The owners are super friendly and respond quickly to any needs you may have. We were lucky to meet Mohammad on our stay and offered us fruits and picked our own as well. Any amenities you may need are all available on site. We had such a great romantic relaxing time.

  • Great little cabin with beautiful views. You also have access to washer and dryer which is very helpful!

    Heather2020-01-11T00:00:00Z
  • Probably the best experience I had on Airbnb. Patricia is very thoughtful and sweet to communicate with. The place is amazing - Great environment and decoration. It has almost everything ready for you. Overall a great experience! Would recommend to anyone.

This classic Hawaiian plantation house is well maintained and exhibits the vintage charm of old Hawaii with an ocean view. The house is surrounded on all four sides by tropical vegetation including banana trees, which can be seen from the bedroom window. A two minute walk takes you to quaint Honokaa town for gift shops, grocery stores or to see a movie at the local theatre. You may cook at home or eat out - Italian fine dining, Grandmas kitchen, an all vegetarian cafe etc.
This is a great room for couples or a single person exploring the island. This room has a closet, a dresser, night stands, and a peekaboo view of the ocean. There is also plenty of light and a ceiling fan for warmer days.
We are 7 miles from Waipio Valley, with a two-minute walk into town—a convenient location to grab a bite in town or go to the market.
  • Anne's beautiful house is located close to the main street of Honokaa where you can do some grocery shopping, have a coffee or just walk along. Waipio Valley is pretty close and easy to reach. You can get a lot of other precious recommendations what to do and I enjoyed so much talking to them in the evening. Thanks for all!

  • I truly enjoyed staying an Anne's place. She was a perfect host and I loved her recommendations and how she took care of me as I would be a family member! I felt like at home, so if I am ever on the Big Island again, I would definitely love to stay at Anne's place :) Thank you so much for everything!

  • Anne and Ravi's home in Honoka'a is a great location for trips to Waipio valley, Akaka falls and Hapuna Beach areas, not to mention Honoka'a downtown. They are welcoming, warm, generous hosts and we very much enjoyed our few days at their clean, tidy, equipped home. We would happily return and don't hesitate to recommend this home to you.

  • Anne’s place is amazing! She is so nice and helpful. She created a book with really great local tips as well. I highly recommend!!!

  • This stay at your home made our travel to Big Island even more worth. We loved the stories you had to tell, the special tipps you shared with us and the card game you introduced to us. Besides that we got enough privacy and a nice clean room, which we always would book again.

    Stefanie2019-01-13T00:00:00Z
  • Anne’s Airbnb was the first room-only Airbnb that I have booked and I was pleasantly surprised. I had everything I needed and on top Anne and Ravi were such caring and nice hosts that I felt like at home with friends. We had some really nice evenings together, talked and laughed a lot. The room itself is cozy and the WiFi worked very well. I would recommend to rent a car when on Big Island. Parking is no problem at Anne’s place. I will definitely stay there again.

  • Anne and her partner, Ravi, were not only exceptionally hospitable and kind but also some of the most interesting people I've met. Expect insightful conversations, a very close walk to town, a very comfortable bed and airy room, and beautiful natural scenery surrounding the house. The town itself is very charming, quiet, and peaceful. I cannot recommend this place enough!

    Ashley2018-08-26T00:00:00Z
  • Anne and Ravi were extremely nice people. We talked a lot about various interesting topics and they told us about American culture. We even went to the stunnig theatre of Honokaa together. Both of them were very welcoming, open and shared a lot of things with us. We received tipps to what to do and precise hiking instructions. Our room was clean and well thought out; there were drawers and a closet. Everything was in a hibiscus design and looked good. There was a nice fan that kept us cool. The shower in the bathroom was new, prettily decorated and roomy. Very nice for exhausted travelers. We had a great time there and recommend it to everyone.

1300 sq/ft 1 bed house with en suite bathroom. A quite peaceful retreat to rejuvenate in nature, away from city, yet only 10 mins to Historic Honokaa town. The house is central north so you can go to Waipio valley 20 mins and to Kona or Hilo either side of the island. Plus it's on the famous Old Mamalahoa road which Lance Armstrong wrote that "It's his top 5 roads to bike on in the world"! Experience nature, Hawaii bamboo and forest! A one of a kind place and custom built house with en suite.
We are north so we do not get any VOG and is safe from the volcanic activity. We have many people evacuating to this area it has the best air quality all year round. The space is very special it has antique mid century cabinets and the house is furnished with many asian antiques even the entrance is a large buddha for good energy! You will have the best sleep as the temperature is cooler at night and you get to hear the wild birds and animals at night! Bedroom with en suite with view of the zen courtyard. My favorite place to come write my vision and rejuvenate. We often have celebrities, and vip guest comes stay on retreat to write their book, or to be with nature. Please be mindful of the quite hrs from 9pm-9am to ensure a great stay for every guest. The Main house is split into two private rentals with own entrance, if you would like to book the whole place we offer the whole retreat plus another separate 2 bedroom house next door! The only draw back are that Hawaii homes the walls do not have insulation because it doesn't get that cold and the walls are thin and you can hear a little through them like hotels. However you are getting a one of kind house for half the price you will pay for a hotel and you get to experience a custom built zen house. Our cleaning lady lives on property also in a separate house next door if you have questions and she is there if you any assistance! We have a yard dog that is in a gated area all you have to say is hi Luna and instantly she will whine and know you are a friend! You will fall in love with the house!
My place is so quiet in the forest yet only 10 mins to town to restaurants, theatre, pool, pub, groceries, markets, cafe, golfing and shops. Please check out my Shave Ice shop and my CreaProducts studio that was on Shark Tank Season 7 episode 27!
  • Mai’s place was great! Exactly as described and with such a relaxed aura. It was nice to come here after a long day of fun in the sun. You won’t be disappointed!

  • Find a hidden gem in the highlands of the big island!

    Lisa2020-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful home in a gorgeous part of the island. We slept so well there. It can get a little chilly (bring socks!) but the host had plenty of space heaters so we were cozy. Great place to explore from or just relax in. Full kitchen for those who want to cook, we bought local lamb, dish, and produce and had some lovely meals at home.

    Lisa2020-01-06T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful and serene place. Mai is a great and responsive host. Glad we got the pleasure to stay here.

    Victoria2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • We spent 2 nights at Mai's place just after Christmas, and definitely enjoyed our stay! It is certainly cooler in this part of the island, and we appreciated it after the heat of Kona. The two nights we were there, it rained heavily both nights, which didn't bother us in the least--it was lovely hearing the rain on the roof :). During the day it did not rain at all, and it was a lovely cool temperature in the house. Our long-sleeved shirts/light hoodies were pulled out and kept us comfortable. The house was very clean, and we appreciated the Christmas decor. The kitchen is well stocked with plates, cutlery, cooking gear, etc, though based on previous reviews, we made sure we brought our own stapes such as salt and assorted spices, sugar, etc in addition to our other groceries. The beds were comfortable and there were sufficient linens for the pull-out couch. You could hear some noise from the highway and occasionally from the adjoining unit, but nothing that kept us from sleeping well. Mai kept us well informed with how to check in and making sure we were satisfied. We would recommend this as a unique change of pace and environment from Kona.
