Huge, spacious, artistic, modern and inspiring home in the Oakland Hills. Perfect play or work retreat. Large exercise studio, office space and large master bedroom. Happy, color-filled home with plants. Super fast internet. A quiet street - more walkers than cars. Plenty of parking. 3 bedrooms each with high end mattresses. Indoor jacuzzi tub. Front balcony has views of the hills. Back balcony wooded. Relax, create, BE in the Enlightenment House.

The space
It's a tall two-story home that sits on a hill. An architect built the home for himself, it's private and expansive. We have a view of a private golf course and the hills. If you listen closely outside at night, you can hear the wolves howling at the Oakland Zoo. We love sitting on the front deck sipping our morning tea as we watch the sunrise over the hills. We live here part time, so it's a very cozy personal atmosphere in a spacious home (4,300 square feet). A gourmet kitchen with lots of appliances, gadgets, knives, and condiments. Just bring your food and you'll be able to cook whatever you want.

Great for two couples, friends or professionals looking for a creative and open work space. This house is not recommended for toddlers, it is not child proofed.

The master bedroom has a king bed with an adjustable bed base. If you’ve never tried an adjustable mattress base, now’s your chance! Try the “zero gravity option.” The second and third bedrooms have high-end queen beds. (memory foam mattresses (T&N, Essentia, and Nest bedding). The second and third bedroom share a “Jack-n-Jill” bathroom. There's a half bath upstairs near the great room/kitchen area.

The living room is quite spacious. Great for hanging out or having creative discussions.

We have stairs from the driveway to the front door, and once inside a flight of stairs to the living area and kitchen. If you have trouble with stairs, sadly, our house is not for you.

Guest access
We recommend parking in our driveway. Plenty of street parking too. You will need a car, or take Uber to get to the interesting places in the Bay Area.

Please do not park directly across the street in our neighbor’s driveway. It looks like a parking spot but it’s not.

Other things to note
This is a residential community and quiet street. Visitors other than the guests listed on the reservation are not permitted. If you’d like us to consider a request for visitors, please send an inquiry with details.

We mainly live here. When we go out of town, we make the home available for short term rental. This means the house is very cozy, not a sterile hotel setting. We have our bookcases, our art, our kitchen utensils, etc.

Please treat our home like you are visiting a favorite relative! If you stay longer than a week, we will ask you to water the plants.

We have a huge refrigerator and freezer. You have almost all of the refrigerator available to you and the first two shelves of the freezer.

If you have trouble with stairs, sadly, our house is not for you.

Neighborhood highlights

House is located in the Oakland Hills above the world famous Oakland Zoo. The house has views of the private Sequoyah Country Club. There are MANY hiking trails within a short drive or a 20-minute walk. Good for cycling too. We like to walk around the neighborhood, as do our neighbors!

6 miles from the Oakland airport. Easy to get to downtown Oakland, Berkeley, and a BART (subway) station.

For casual dining, we love to sit outside at the Skyline Pizza Restaurant - 5 minute drive. Lots of cafes and restaurants in Montclair Village - two hills over from us.

We are both superhosts and Airbnb travelers. We have two fabulous houses - one in the Oakland hills and another in the southern Utah desert. Typically, we make one house available when we are at the other house. Occasionally we double book, and then either go camping or become Airbnb guests ourselves. Mark is a Bay Area native and Shelley fell in love with the Bay Area in 1980. We are self- employed which was one of the reasons we bought the Oakland house, which has dedicated work spaces, and includes an exercise gym. Mark is a spiritual teacher merging fitness into presence. Shelley works as a demographer. We both love biking, cooking, gardening, the wine country and loving life together. Peace, Mark and Shelley
