The shack is located on an urban farm/garden, is tucked behind our main house, and looks over the back gardens. There is an entry/kitchen/dining room, 2 additional rooms (a bedroom & an office/sitting room), and a full bathroom. The space has easy access to the outside gardens & seating areas, where it is fun to wander around when the weather is pleasant. The decor is clean and calm, yet colorful & cozy.

The space
When the skies are clear and the weather is warm (a year-round occurrence in California), lounge in the sun on the large back patio + sitting areas that overlook the back farm/garden. Watch the fruit trees (pomegranates, persimmons, apples, pears, mandarins, avocado, fig) grow and enjoy picking and eating your own food. (Yes! You are welcome to sample from the bounty.) Kids & adults enjoy discovering ripe berries & brightly colored flowers, and spotting various birds (especially hummingbirds!), bees, & butterflies.

Coming to check out all the Bay Area has to offer? This home is the perfect spot. Close to several great music venues/parks/restaurants in Oakland, take the ferry to San Francisco’s piers, where you'll see street performers and seals+sea lions, check out the cheap (but great) eats, or do a “fancy night” and go high end, hike among the Redwoods at Muir Woods, do a day trip to the beaches (Stinson or Santa Cruz), and take a jaunt to any of our amazing nearby wine regions. Wherever your Bay Area adventures take you, you'll recharge when you come back "home" to a relaxing sauna, organic food that you pluck right from the garden, and welcoming indoor/outdoor communal spaces.

Coming for work? This could be your ideal space. We have super easy/quick access to the freeway by car, several nearby public transportation options, and Lyft or Uber are always minutes away. Or use your laptop at the desk space or take it into the garden to work from the shack among the apple and pear trees. It doesn’t get more California than that.

Guest access
The Shack is separate from our main house and is equipped with all of the basic amenities. The kitchenette includes a small refrigerator, toaster oven, hot plate, electric water kettle, cutlery/utensils, plates/bowls/glasses, and silverware. Salt, pepper, and olive oil are also stocked in the cabinets. The dining/kitchen area is light-filled & inviting for sharing a meal and/or playing games. The bedroom has a comfy memory foam queen bed, bedside tables with reading lights+charging outlets, and space for hanging clothes. The office/sitting area is calm, colorful & cozy and can easily be transformed into a second sleeping area.

Other things to note
The Shack is tucked behind my main house which is rented separately.
Also, we are near to freeways and will hear the hum of traffic noises when in the garden.

Location

Oakland, California, United States

Our home is in a neighborhood with a great mix of folks -- young/old, working commuters/retirees, and families. We are located 5 blocks from the main drag in the Laurel neighborhood of Oakland. There are coffee & tea shops, several restaurant options for takeout or sit-in (pizza, West African, bbq, brew pub, Cambodian, Thai, New American), nail salons, art/handicraft boutiques, fitness centers&yoga, grocery&drug stores, and a post office. We are also perfectly located in between the beaches & bay views of Alameda going west and the hiking trails & city/landscape views of the Oakland hills going East. It is a 5-minute car ride to Lake Merritt (and downtown Oakland). We have SUPER EASY access to freeways going North/South/East/West for any Bay Area day trips that you can think of.
