HOME away from HOME (green, ample and lush)

Martina's place is in the foothills of Yeka, a sub-city in the northeastern portion of Addis. It is a two-minute walk from Menelik II hospital and within walking distance of a relatively expensive Italian restaurant and a nice coffee shop/bakery (Koba Patisserie). The Airbnb/house itself is in a compound shared with a local family with two (very quiet) children. It has plenty of green and grassy areas, which is a huge privilege in Addis. Two cats and three friendly dogs share the space and are very protective of all the residents (and visitors!). The place was clean, had everything I needed (including snacks/breakfast from Martina), and entirely as advertised. I would recommend relying on mobile hotspot for internet, although even that can be spotty.

Secluded house with excellent hillside views

Rekik & her husband Ed were very welcoming. I felt right at home. I came during the rainy season which is just as good of an experience if you have the proper gear (which I did) & itinerary. Ed, supplied me with a map & books to get informed about the culture and historical places around the city. They also suggested the neighbor next door who's a taxi driver that took me around town which made it much easier as I am not familiar with the bus system. I highly recommend and will definitely come back soon! Thank you for making stay such an amazing my experience. I appreciate the hospitality & the family experience. አመሰግናለሁ Peace & Blessings

We were enjoying our days at Chernet’s place. Chernet is a pleasant person willing to help with anything! Very good communication before we arrived and we could plan our days in Arba Minch with Chernet’s help. It was very helpful that he was waiting for us at the buss station!

Leul was an exceptional host-warm, responsive, and helpful with local tips that made my stay even more enjoyable. Whether it was recommending a great nearby restaurant or ensuring I had everything I needed, they truly went above and beyond. The location was perfect—close to everything I wanted to explore, yet peaceful and quiet at night. I couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay. I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in the area!

Girar Apartments

This was one of the best stays Ive ever had with a property on Airbnb. The placed was just as described, with all of the amenities, backup generator and very peaceful location. I would suggest this property to any large group or anyone looking to have a quiet get away. I was able to work remotely with no problem. I really really enjoyed my stay. When I return I will for sure consider staying here. The host Dagmawi even picked me up from another Airbnb property where I had just finished my stay, to begin my stay at this property. Dagmawi giving my ride to the new property made the transition so much easier. Im really thankful for them going the extra mile to help.

WGM Furnished Apartment

EllieRating, 5 stars110 months ago
Short answer: Selam is the best Air BNB host I have ever had. Staying at WGM furnished apartment was an incredible experience because of - but not limited to - 1) Selam 2) the coffee shop (best in Addis!) 3) backyard. Long answer: Let me begin with day one. My first day arriving, Selam offered my friend and I transportation from the airport which we unfortunately forgot about upon arrival - my advice - TAKE IT! They will try to gouge you on prices to literally go across the street. This apartment is located on Bole International Airport Road which, while it is a bit loud during the day because of the traffic, means that you are very close to the airport (if that's important to you) but also located in a very cool neighborhood in Bole. Here, you are within walking distance to Friendship Centre (groceries, commerce, spa) and Edna Mall area (bars, restaurants). Even closer are a whole host of Ethiopian bars and clubs where you can get access a more authentic scene. After arriving at the two-bedroom apartment, Selam immediately took me on a walk around the neighborhood before sending me off with her sister and cousin to purchase a sim card - something that you CANNOT do yourself unless you are fortunate enough to speak Amharic. It is an extremely frustrating and time consuming process so be prepared. Afterwards, they took me to Selam's cousin's house for a home cooked meal. This was, to date, still one of the best days I've had in Addis Ababa. Throughout our entire stay, Selam was extremely friendly, giving us medicine when we were sick, telling us where to go get massages, where to get our hair braided, how to rent a driver and more. She really was one part mom, one part concierge. Any problems we had with the apartment she solved within 24 hours, and usually much faster than that. It really was a tough decision deciding to move out of WGM apartments, but unfortunately given that I work for the United Nations ECA in Kazanchis, I needed a place closer for the remaining 5 months of my consultancy. I am still not sure this was the right decision as renting an apartment in Addis Ababa is a soul shattering experience and renting through air bnb was effortless - the only effortless process in Addis, I'm sure. Just so I don't seem completely biased (which I am), the downside of living at WGM is that not all apartments in the building are created equal. If you get a chance to check out the various apartments before your arrival, I would recommend doing so as the bathroom in the apartment below ours was much nicer (our hot water heater was finicky and the floor had a tendency to flood during showers). Other than that, please do yourself a favor and stay with Selam, drink the coffee at the cafe downstairs, and eat at backyard. You will not be disappointed.
