My wife and I are both retired educators. As a life-long musician I have played and taught all types of music and instruments. In Hawai'i, my wife and I have embraced Hawaiian music and dance (Hula). My wife and I teach 'ukulele classes at Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park and play with local
na kanikapila (Hawaiian jam sessions) at least twice a week as well as performing with 'ukulele ensembles on the island. My wife dances with a hālau hula (hula school) that has presented at the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival, an annual world-wide hula competition that takes place in Hilo, Hawai'i.

Where you'll be

You will join us at our home, playing on the lanai with views out over the ocean (kai). Additional times and days may be available.
For an additional cost, special arrangements can be made to play right on the beach, enjoying the waves rolling ashore while strumming your 'ukulele under the sighing palm trees. An enchanting Hawaiian experience.

Peter loves music and you can feel it the moment he starts talking about it. :) I did not expect that I could play much music from a 1.5 hour class, but I left feeling inspired and invigorated by Peter's knowledge and passion for music, and the history of Ukulele! You won't regret this if you've been wanting to learn to play the ukulele. Do it because you won't regret this and you'll leave wanting to buy a ukulele too! :D

Really awesome experience. Peter and Cathy were amazing hosts who provided a history of the Ukelele as well being able to demonstrate how to play and what kinds of styles there are. One of my favorites parts of this trip so far. Very welcoming hosts, definetly if you're interested in learning about the Ukelele, check them out!

Peter is a great teacher who can cater his lessons to all levels. He is a retired music teacher and you can tell he holds a vast knowledge that he knows how to share with his students. I left the 1.5 hour with lots on new music, different ideas on how to play songs I knew and lots of facts and history behind the songs and Hawaii culture. It was really nice to have class on his lanai at his home as it made it feel personal and gave me more of a sense of life on the island. I highly recommend his class!

What a wonderful experience! I lived my dream of playing ukulele on the Big Island, Peter was very helpful with advanced tips for me while Cathy introduced the uke to my friends, and we were all able to play together at the end of the lesson in a magical location... Mahalo!

What a wonderful experience! Peter was conscientious about mask wearing and social distancing, but that didn’t stop him from sharing a tremendous amount of technique, theory, context, and culture during our lesson. I arrived with a rusty but extensive musical history in piano, theory, and guitar, plus a couple of years of aimlessly noodling around on my ‘ukulele, and I left with a packet of exercises, level-appropriate recommendations for some books and workbooks, and a growing interest in tablature and traditional Hawaiian music! I was able to immediately put into practice a lot of the things I learned, and even (finally) picked up some of the tricks of improvising on the fretboard. Peter is highly knowledgeable about the history of Hawaii, its music, its culture, and its people. I learned about ‘ukulele, but I learned so much more besides! It takes a person of great skill to teach at all levels and to integrate so much variety into a lesson, and I was pleasantly surprised at his ability to teach affectively in such a friendly, conversational style. I highly recommend this experience to anyone of any level of musical experience.
