What you'll do

As we stretch and assemble our hiking packs, I’ll spend about five minutes introducing myself and the surrounding network of trails and peaks. We’ll then walk to the Piestewa Peak trailhead, about a five-minute NE walk from the parking area.

I’ll briefly point out the trail map and offer a few recommendations for completing the summit trek, then we’re off on our desert hiking experience!

The summit trail is appropriately rated "extremely difficult," as the elevation gain remains consistently steep for 85%-95% of the 1.2-mile ascent. I'll readily point out and offer strategic resting spots and scenic views along the way (there are five!). We'll pass a variety of cacti, metamorphic rock formations, and potentially some small animals as we make our way to the summit.

At the top, you'll be rewarded with 360-degree views of Phoenix and the surrounding suburbs and mountain ranges. This is the perfect opportunity to snap some memorable photos, which I'm more than happy to help with! After a prudent rest with water and snacks (and touching your boot on the official summit seal), we'll make our timely descent back to the parking area.

**If you don't see a time that works for you, please send me a message and I'll see what I can work out (I also lead evening hikes and other summit hikes around the valley). Just shoot me a message!**

I am a Phoenix, AZ native and have been hiking local area trails for 25+ years. Piestewa Peak (formerly Squaw Peak) is one of my go-to summit destinations. On average, I hike this trail around 50 times per year--in addition to other peaks around the valley.

I'm passionate about Phoenix's mountain preserves, and I'm excited to take visitors and residents alike on a memorable, challenging hiking experience--one that effectively captures the dynamic landscape of our sunny metropolis. Come #azhikewithmike for guided views of Phoenix you'll want to capture and share with friends and family.

Where you'll be

During your local hiking visit, we'll largely keep to the Piestewa Peak Summit Trail within Phoenix Mountains Park. Piestewa prominently rises 1,176 feet above the city and backs up against the popular Dreamy Draw Park Area.

The park provides dozens of miles of intersecting trails. You'll experience the second-highest point in the Phoenix Mountains! On a clear day, you'll see plenty of other iconic mountain peaks and metropolitan landmarks.

I had troubles and schedule changes on my end prior to this experience and Mike was incredibly accommodating in making sure I was still able to take this stunning hike with him. I highly recommend this trail, and moreover I was so thrilled I got to experience it with Mike. Wonderful guy, excellent value.

Mike was so awesome! He gave very helpful instructions for parking and where to meet so we weren’t lost when we got there. He was very knowledgeable about the area and gave lots of recommendations on food and other hikes to do. We felt like we learned so much on our hike. Mike was very friendly and even captured some amazing pictures for us when we reached the top :)

Mike was awesome! He knew a lot about the various trails in the area and is an avid hiker. This particular trail gets a bit intense forwards the end, but it’s all worth it. Bring gloves, as you’ll have the use your hands to crawl up a few rocks before getting to the “real top” of the mountain.

Mike is a very experienced hiker and we had a terrific time! It was the right level of cardio and adventure without being too difficult for novice hikers. We definitely wouldn’t have enjoyed it as much without Mike. Highly recommended!
