What you'll do

The experience starts with a discussion on safety and how glass works. Participants select a mold/shape of an item they wish to make. They prepare the mold so the glass does not stick to it, as the mold will shape the glass while in the kiln. Once these initial preparations are complete, we can start learning how to cut glass. Once this is mastered. We cut the appropriate shape that we have selected and smooth the edges with a grinding machine.
After a short snack break we are ready to allow the creative juices to flow. Using all forms of inspiration and samples we prepare the designs that are within our hearts, waiting to be expressed through the paint brush.
I happily share painting techniques that I have learnt. I have many examples in my workshop of completed items to help display the finished look of glass painting....as it is different, say from pottery painting or even painting on paper.
The program for the kiln is discussed and the kiln started. This runs for approximately 24 hours. This includes the heating process and the slow cooling process.
These experiences are conducted holding safety first, in a peaceful environment with music, snacks and beverages.

I am a creative being, who is over joyed to be recycling broken windows, converting them into beautiful, painted, unique glassware. I am self taught and have been recycling bottles and broken windows for about 10 years now. I love that this art form helps the environment by up cycling waste. Once prepared the glass is painted and then melted in a glass kiln at high temperatures. Glass is a living entity and is a wonderful medium to work with. It truly has is own identity (and Mind :-) ) and it's always a surprise to see what's unfolded during the high temperatures of the oven.

PLEASE NOTE THIS WORKSHOP IS CLEANSED AND SANITIZED AFTER EACH EXPERIENCE. KEEPING THE EXPERIENCE TO A MAX OF 6 PEOPLE HELPS PROTECT YOUR PERSONNEL SPACE.

Where you'll be

I have converted my double garage at home into a workshop, it is ideal for this experience, with everything at close range. The workshop leads off my home so toilets, glass washing facilities and refreshments are close at hand.

This was such a soulful experience for me. I told Brigitte that she should call it Glass Therapy because the process was so therapeutic, and she created the perfect physical and spiritual environment for the activity. I learned quite a bit about glass and made my own creation with Brigitte's masterful and patient guidance. This was a rather unique experience. Thank you for being a thoughtful host Brigette. I enjoyed it, including the cups of Rooibos, inspiring conversation, and your beautiful healing garden.

Wonderful experience. Brigette is the bomb and very knowledgable. She had a cake since this was an activity for my wife's birthday. I feel like we could do this experience again and get even more out of it! Such a blast!

I don't know there are many places in the world that you can do this. It has been a highlight of my time in Johannesburg. And Brigitte is a lovely, warm person and a good teacher. I cannot recommend this highly enough.
