What you'll do

I change the venue of this experience time to time because I want guest to have a different experience and see new incredible art spaces in Nairobi therefore I will keep you posted on the specific venue once you book but the meeting point will not change. We will head straight to the workshop which will have different instruments to try but our main one will be djembe. I will teach you from simple to hardest local rhythms and that from around Africa and Europe such as Zumba, Tango, Bhingi, salsa and more. We will have breaks in between each play for discussion and questions if you have any. We will finish our activity by combining all the rhythms together without stopping. Sometimes I may switch to the guitar to harmonize the beat. Our activity will finish right on time.

Johnson

I am Johnson but you will here people around calling me 'C-Jeys.'This is my artist name. When I was eight I was taken to an art school where where art was given more priority than education. We did all sort of traditional art from dancing, poet, acrobatic, acting to singing. This is where my love for cultural exchange was born. After college I joined art and musical groups as a volunteer as a cultural promoter and teaching African instruments and most which is 'Djembe' I currently teach percussions in schools as well as promoting team building in work places by introducing a program called, ' Rhythm in Office' around Nairobi. I am also a member of a 'Daraja Band' which fuses music from around the world

Where you'll be

We will conduct out drumming workshop at Nairobi's main souvenir. market located in the heart of the city, 'City Market. City market has dozens of stalls selling wood carvings, drums, spears, shields clothing and more. The venue is prone to change depending with my activities that I am involved in. Sometime we can even have our workshops at Festivals which is always fun.
