What you'll do

I will demonstrate the 17th Century of floating paint on a thick gel surface. I will show how the paint is manipulated with combs and rakes rather than a paint brush. We practice on paper a bunch to find that perfect combination of colors, the order the paint is dropped, and the pattern or design you desire for either your 100% silk scarf or cotton fabric.

I have over 30 years of teaching marbling to all ages, from 5 year olds to 70 year olds. I will provide background on marbling + historical reference to the origin of the media.

Each workshop participant will leave with a completed wearable work of art, a marbled silk scarf or a square fabric which can be stretched on wood framing! Wow, you will amaze yourself!!

I'd love to meet you while creating a memorable art experience of your visit to Asheville. Reach out to me at www.majik-studios.com and see what is happening when you are vacationing here.

Currently, I instruct students at the prestigious John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC in different workshops from papermaking to marbling.
I have over 30 years of experience in marbling for my own products, in public settings like schools, hotels, and many on site venues.

I have been in the education field since 1978 when I began teaching public school elementary art. I ran an art center for a brief time on Hilton Head Island, SC before relocating with my family to Asheville, NC.
I taught elementary art at Brevard Elementary School in Brevard, NC for 17 years until I retired in 2016 to teach adults my love of marbling and papermaking.

I look forward to enhancing your trip to Asheville in a creative way.

Where you'll be

My studio is located at 207 Coxe Avenue, inside the Refinery Creator Space. The outside of the building has a blue mural with birds painted to attract attention to our building. Come into our well lit Studio 13, halfway down the hall on the right.

The studio is well equipped with tables, chairs, easels and a small gallery representing our artists.

You will leave mentally clear and calm because the act of creating art relieves stress.

Pam was such fun! We all had a great time playing with color, and she showed us so many different ways to marble the colors to make different types of patterns. Many unexpected and pretty surprises when we lifted the paper.

The afternoon was so fun !!! Pam is a wonderful teacher and made the whole experience so memorable ! She is very passionate about her craft, which made the 3 of us “newbies” just as excited . We each went home with pieces of art and our silk scarf. Each time I wear my scarf, I will remember what a great day we had.

Pam, It was a pleasure to work with you, be taught by you, & then take a worthwhile finished product home to Jax. My daughter surprised me and what a great experience! Thanks again for your expertise, patience and kindness! We now feel like we can be called “artist!” As you said, there are no mistakes and YOU convinced US! What fun!! I would highly recommend marbling artwork! We left with the color of joy in our souls! Thanks so much for a unique, and fun experience!

I truly enjoyed this workshop with Pam. She was super knowledgeable yet very hands on and let me experiment a lot before choosing the design and creating the garment. I spent 2 hours away from the cold and drizzle having fun playing with color and design. I left with many pieces of beautiful marbled paper and a wonderful bandana that my mother will certainly love. Thank you Pam! I hope to be back in Asheville to do this again!

Wonderful experience! So much fun getting to create a unique piece of art that I can take home. Pam was absolutely lovely and loved her craft. She was very helpful throughout the whole process, and made it a lot of fun to try out different methods of marbling before creating our final piece. While you'll take home your own fabric creation, you'll also create lots of paper marbling that will be excellent to turn into other creations. Next time I'm in town I want to try out her advanced class!
