What you'll do

Come with me for a nostalgic journey to Yuen Long!
An old town in the New Territories with more than 200 years of rich history, and even undiscovered by many Hong Kong locals!

Why don’t we start the day with freshly Made-to-Order dim sum?

Let us begin at a vintage tea house fashioned after Hong Kong public housing, showcasing the everyday lives of ordinary people.

After a hearty breakfast, we take a stroll to an ancient walled village built during the late-Qing Dynasty around 1800s.

Inside the narrow streets of the village, we visit government rated
‘Grade 1 Historic buildings of Hong Kong’ including:

- Hong Kong’s first pawn shop
- Hong Kong’s only surviving architecture of a Qing Dynasty tavern
- Two operating Qing dynasty temples

We also see a traditional bamboo plaque maker, which handmade 3 story high advertisement banner. A craft that is disappearing.

At Yuen Long’s main street, we get a sense of Hong Kong’s food culture by visiting a handmade crispy egg roll maker.

Finally we end our journey by either sampling wonton noodle at a Michelin rated 70 years old shop OR an equally delicious Hong Kong style dessert at a shop so popular among locals.

Welcome! Born and raised in Hong Kong, I was a teacher of an English speaking school.

I spent the last 25 years living in Yuen Long, a charming city just 24 mins train northwest of Tsim Sha Tsui, and close to China.

I love exploring local places and meeting new people. I think traveling to different countries is an educational process of learning more about the world and cultures beyond your borders.

What better way than to meet people and experience local life through the lens of someone who has seen the transformation of Hong Kong?

Come join me for an insider's guide tour and see!

The tour with Helen was absolutely wonderful! Helen was a great communicator before the tour, and it was easy to meet her at the starting point. We took the train out to Yuen Long, a New Territories community where she lived for over 20 years. After a delicious breakfast of dim sum in one of her favorite spots that showcases some of the history of the local community, Helen showed me around the historic Qing dynasty community with four of the first class historic buildings in Hong Kong. Because the tour was over Chinese New Year, we even got to see a local community celebration with kids and adults dressed up in dragon costumes celebrating the Year of the Rat. We finished the tour a Michelin-rated noodle shop. I appreciated Helen’s connection with the community, her willingness to share about her life in Hong Kong, and the great food I would not have found otherwise. Highly recommended for an authentic view of Hong Kong outside of the Kowloon peninsula/Hong Kong Island!

If you want to get out of downtown, then this is a good option. The tour is through Yuen Long which is a small outlying village. If you’ve never been to Chinese street markets or small restaurants, this would be a real eye-opening treat.

Had a very good experience with Helen! This tour was quite unique and allowed me to see the another side of Hongkong, a more traditional, ancient and Chinese one...The dim sum we had was magnificent! And thank you so much Helen for inviting us the dessert in the end.

Helen was thoughtful and conscientious, providing both cultural insights and personal stories which allowed for an interesting perspective of the lives of people in Hong Kong during an earlier period and how it has connected to people living in Yuan Tong and, perhaps, the New Territory today. Equally nice were the tasty delicacies selected which characterized Hong Kong style cooking and were such a treat to eat. All in all, a very enjoyable experience both food and learning-wise. Unique, informative and delicious.

Helen is a very charming lady and a true storyteller. This tour was walk back in time, great opportunity to learn more about history and see hidden gems that you wouldn’t be able to find on your own. And that breakfast was soooo delicious.

Helen shows an exceedingly interesting side of Hongkong. The way she showed me this place taught me so much about the history and current life of Yuen Long and Hongkong. Moreover, the local delicacies were great! I highly recommend Helen’s excursion, because it satisfies the mind and the senses!
