What you'll do

Are you visiting Helsinki and interested in learning a traditional Finnish handicraft technique? Come to our studio and take a short course in weaving traditional Finnish rag rugs in a wooden floor loom.

We will start by telling you about the Finnish floor looms and how they work. After that you will learn how to make weft material from used textiles in the traditional way. You will end up weaving a mini rug (approx. 45 x 45 cm) in one of our floor looms. By the end of the course, we will finish the item that you will take home with you.

We are Zoe and Merja, two craft enthusiasts brought together by weaving. Both of us had a different career before starting this journey but weaving and knitting have been our passion for the last 10 years. Finally after finishing our studies as Textile artisan and Clothing artisan respectively, we opened a weaving and knitting studio in Helsinki. Welcome to Kutomo Craft Studio!

Amazing experience!!! It was everything I had hoped for, and more. Zoe made me feel at ease on entering her studio, provided me with some tea and I felt right at home. The studio is clean, bright, cozy, and I loved being surrounded by yarn and fabric. Zoe gave great didactic information about the tradition of Finnish rag rug making, and the parts of the loom. She helped me pick out balls of fabric, and was patient as I took my time to select matching colors. She gave very clear and detailed instructions about how to use the loom, demonstrated for me, and was very available to help if I had questions or problems once I got started. I had plenty of time to complete the rag rug and I am so happy with the finished product! Everything was perfect! I really enjoyed discovering the art of weaving and didn’t imagine how fun it would be. I’ve tried crocheting and knitting in the past, and much prefer weaving on the loom. I will definitely look for a loom I can rent once I return home, so that I can work on more projects.

Loved this rug class with using a loom. It was fun and it was satisfying to take what you just made home right after. There is a lot of one-on-one time with the Instructors, who are super kind and patient.
