What you'll do

You'll learn how to drive a wide-beam and all the tips that come with it. As we cruise the canal we will show you the ropes so you can jump right into action! You'll be driving the boat yourself, experiencing the canal from a completely new perspective! Be prepared to be active, maybe wet (Hopefully not! Life jackets are provided) and it will be a lot of fun. We'll guide you and be with you the entire time while you get your hands on steering, whether you're new to boating or just curious about it!

You don’t need any previous boating experience. A driving licence isn't necessary to cruise a boat however if you are thinking of moving into a boat you would benefit from basic training to feel comfortable and safe with cruising. As a continuous cruiser we move on the London canals so your training will take place wherever Freedom is moored at that time. The boat is officially licensed and completely safe.

Basic training session is about 3 hours, we also offer extensive full day training: going through locks and introduction to boating lifestyle and technical workings (please contact us to arrange). A maximum of 6 people per session ensures a very personal experience and your safety.

We are Gaïa and David, floaty live-aboards who met on the towpath. Boating is our passion, profession and hobby. We have lived on a the canals for many years as continuous cruisers in London and have gained extensive experience cruising various boats , particularly wide-beams in both a professional and personal capacity and have a full-on experience of living on a barge. Over the years we have learned boating skills such as going through locks, tunnels, mooring up, rope knots and general boating knowledge. We are both qualified helmsmen.
